  • Fear and security: Do you know that the fear of lost is a greater motivator than the prospect of gain when it comes to most people?

    Business ideas that will help protect customers from any danger will be highly appealing. Ideas that can provide just a little information on how to prevent any kind of lost seems always to be a winner.

  • Greed: You probably know this by know but anything that offers the prospects of great returns is always a winner. Customers usually buy with emotions rather than logic. But deliver on what you promised or you will miss your customers as fast as you make them.
  • Differentiation: Can you be a little different from is obtainable presently? Customers can be a very funny bunch. Just dangle something faster, better, or just plain newer and you usually grab their attention. Your difference doesn’t have to be great to get a slice of the market.
  • Niche Markets: Big markets are usually the habits of big business. Going in could be like swimming with the sharks. You don’t want to get eaten do you? You are better off in a market that is too small for the sharks to swim in. This markets are usually easy to enter and own as the sharks usually neglected, ignored or served them badly in the past.

Spotting A Gap In The Market.

Another way to identify a great opportunity is see something that people would go for it if only they know about. People don’t usually know what is possible. There might be a great demand waiting for someone... you hopefully... to recognize that the market is crying out for something no one is supplying.

Here are some ways to go about identifying a market gap before starting a business in Nigeria.

  • Adapting: Can you take an idea that is already working in another business and bring it to your particular market of interest?
  • Locating: Do customers have to travel far to reach their present source of supply? Is there any way you could supply what customers need to their doorsteps? The internet could present a lot of opportunities in this regard.
  • Size: if you made things a different size, would that appeal to a new market?
  • Timing: Are customers happy with current operating hours? If you operate earlier, later or longer, would you tap in a new market?
